The Shade Tree

The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed. A stronghold in times of trouble. Psalm 9:9

It is stifling hot here right now. Granted, not as hot as in Bangladesh, Middle East, or Phoenix but never the less hot. Every time I go to the store I search for a shade tree to park under. This tree provides a small amount of relief from the direct sun beating down upon me.

The pressures of life sometimes can overshadow us like a dark cloud  or a burning sun. We need somewhere to just run away and hide and rest for a while. Jesus is our 'shade tree' when the heat of life gets turned up on us. We run to Him for our relief. He is our shelter.

Do you need relief from something? Run to Jesus. He is your shelter.

PRAYER: Thank you for being my shade tree and protecting me from stuff that comes and beats down upon me. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Summer Vacation Is Over

Take delight in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4

Remember the Sabbath Day and keep it Holy is one of the Ten Commandments we learn as new believers. Even non believers are exposed to this. Many want to discount it as the law, and  say the law has passed away. The Ten Commandments used to be displayed in public school classrooms and the world was better for it.

Vacations are winding up during this Labor Day weekend. Schools in some places have not yet started like the ones here in the Southeast where I am. Often in the summer, vacations are taken away from church as well, as doing fun stuff is so much more important we rationalize."I don't need to be in a church, I worship outside", I have heard some say. Really? Not trying to judge as maybe some folks do. I attended a service once at the top of a mountain while snow skiing in Colorado. But let's face it. It is so much easier to not pack a Bible and not even take time to pray. I am not perfect as I have at times not made it a priority. We all slip-up sometime.

Now that summer is nearing an end why not make a fall resolution to make God and fellowship first place in your busy schedule. He needs you. Do you need Him? I hope so.

PRAYER: I need you oh I need you. Every hour I need you. I asks forgiveness when I  have put my own pleasure before you. In Jesus' name.Amen.

Snap!

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. James 1:3
What do you think of when you hear that word or sound? For me the most recent was the sound my knee made,or maybe it was 'pop', when I tore my ACL in a fall I took snow  skiing. "Ouch what was that" is what I said. It was an 11 on a ten point pain scale.

Things sometimes happen we are unprepared for and sometimes have tremendous difficulty dealing with. That dreaded phone call or knock at the front door usually not bringing good news. Stuff happens in life we have no control over and we have to pick up and go on. That 'snapping' sound of not so great news often sets us back. Back in 2001 no one expected the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. Unexpected things are part of life. It is the bouncing back that we have to master. And master  you can with God's help!

Whatever it is you are struggling with today let God have your trials.

PRAYER: Lord you are good in the good and the not so good. I thank you I know all things will work out somehow. Help me hang on to hope. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Please Excuse Our Appearance While We Are Under Construction

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10

As I ran on Redstone Arsenal early one morning there was a construction area fenced off with the same message as my title. They were apologizing for the mess while they worked to build something new.

There was a phrase I once heard, "Please be patient God is not finished with me yet" and indeed He is not. All the things we go through , good or bad, in life are creating a useful vessel for The Lord. There may be some rough spots to be sanded but you are a work in progress. Eventually when you are done you will be ready for the kingdom.

Don't complain when trials come your way as they help mold you to be more like Christ.

PRAYER: Thank you for making something beautiful of my life Lord. Help me as I go through trials to hang on as the finished product awaits. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Hurting World Needs Prayer and Care

Whoever mocks the poor shows contempt for their Maker, and whoever gloats over disaster will not go unpunished. Proverbs 17:5

On a recent visit to New Orleans to primarily see The World War 2 Museum, I had to satisfy my curiosity and see the famed Bourbon Street. It is sadly famous for the wrong reason. I should have been 'prayer walking' as I made my way past bars and adult entertainment venues. Some said to me "Why would you even want to see it?" One thing is for sure it made me see the need for prayer in a huge way. I can not even begin to describe the scenes I saw. Thankfully I exited after only ten minutes walking to a safer, quieter, calmer street where we ate supper. There is way more to see in this wonderful city.

This world is full of sad and hurting people and many of them were there on Bourbon Street. These hurting people are on street corners in many of our cities. The product of fatherless homes perhaps, broken marriages, economic downturn, mental illness, abuse, alcoholism or drugs. Only God knows. We are not sent to judge but to pray and reach out and help. It is only the grace of God that keeps us from being on a curb somewhere. We do not know everyone's story so it is best to not judge.

Today when you have the opportunity, first thank God for where He has you in life and look around and see if there is someone who needs a loving touch or smile or even help with a need in their life.

PRAYER: Give me eyes to see and be aware of hurting people beyond my protective 'bubble' Lord. Help me to remember to pray and show your love. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Course Correction

Teach me your way Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness.Give me an undivided heart that I might fear your name. Psalm 86:11

According to the science dictionary, a course correction is in space flight  when the spacecraft has to be returned to its' right path after getting off its' trajectory. Instruments are adjusted to get it back on the right flight path.

Life is a series of 'course corrections' where if you find yourself going in the wrong direction, spiritually speaking,  then it is time to turn around and head the right way. Satan loves to get us off course. His specialty is playing with your mind and thoughts. Maybe making you feel unworthy, too old,too small, or trying to instill fear so that you do not try new things.

Know whatever it is, God is with you helping you along the way. Do not listen to the lies of the enemy. God will guide you on the right course.

PRAYER: Lord I want to stay on the right path and do what pleases you. Help me and guide me on the course you want me to go. In Jesus' name. Amen.

He Walked With God

The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled.Genesis 6:6

In Chapter 5 of Genesis, the genealogy from Adam to Noah is given, and by Enoch's name it says the phrase "he walked with God." To me this says lots. It means he acknowledged God and followed His ways. Many others did not have this statement by their names.

When you die someday will people say you walked with God or something else? Walking with God means you are not self righteous but you also are unashamed.and love the Lord. It does not mean you are better than others but that Jesus lives in you and you want to help others.

Right before the flood in the book of Genesis, not too many people were walking with God. He had had enough and decided to start mankind again with Noah's family. Are you ready to walk with God on a regular basis?

PRAYER: Sometimes I have gone my own way and listened to Satan instead of you. Forgive me Lord. I want to stay on your path and walk with you. In Jesus' name. Amen.

And Suddenly!

Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. Acts 2:2
Several years ago one of my co leaders in Moms in Prayer  used the attribute of God that God is the 'God of the Suddenlies' when she led. It was an awesome attribute.According to sources on the internet the word 'suddenly' is mentioned 41 times in the Bible. God is indeed the 'God of the suddenlies'. Suddenly when we least expect it someday He is coming back to gather up His people. The dead in Christ will rise according to the scriptures and those of us here on Earth will 'suddenly' be gone. It is not something to fear, unless of course you are not right with the Lord, but it is something to anticipate joyfully.

God will suddenly come and in an instant things will change. No more tears, pain, heartache. His glorious return and we who know Him will suddenly be caught up with Him in the heaven. Suddenly Jesus will appear! Suddenly we will be with Him in heaven. The thought is overwhelming and exciting. Suddenly, in an instant! Poof!

In the meantime before this 'suddenly' happens, we need to be going about our business here on Earth living for Him and not for Satan. We need to be getting to know Him better by reading his word each day instead of reading People magazine or checking up on everyone on Facebook first. To start why not start with Chapter 24 of Proverbs or Psalms or in other words the chapter that corresponds to the day it is. Read the book of John. Pray and ask God to make himself known to you. Try to ask yourself if what you are doing bring glory to Him. If you are angry at Him for some reason, tell Him you are sorry and ask Him to direct your paths. He will. He will suddenly be with you.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus thank you for loving me unconditionally. Thank you for waiting for me to give you my whole heart. Forgive me when I have let the world squeeze you out. In Jesus' name. Amen

I Am A Conqueror!

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.  Romans 8:23

How many times do you get up and instead of taking control of your day, with God's help, you stop and worry or second guess yourself? In our Officers' Christian Fellowship group there used to be what was called 'Pray and Plan' where we would meet and pray what to study in the Bible. God was our director and we were the prayer warriors going to Him for direction.

If you claim to be a believer in Jesus Christ you need to stand up, stand tall, be bold, be courageous.  Don't pray and 'give' a situation to God then turn right back around and start fretting. Boldly come to the throne. With God's help you are a CONQUEROR, so remember that.

Today say "God thank you for making me more than a Conqueror and empowering me to stand firm against attacks from my enemy Satan."

PRAYER: I know through you I am a conqueror. I have promises in your word that empower me and give me courage. Help me not be a coward. In Jesus' name. Amen!

Stop Your Murmuring, Christian!

Do everything without grumbling or arguing. Philippians 2:14

Murmuring, gossip, and complaining are not a good thing for believers. It is so easy to fall into that trap though. How many of us maybe go to church, sing the hymns, pray the prayers and feel all holy, then walk out the door and complain about traffic getting out of the church parking lot? Perhaps we grumble at the local restaurant when not served in a timely manner?  Yikes but we may even say something unflattering about the pastor?

Today is the day to stop this very bad habit. If you are honest with yourself we probably all have done it. Satan rejoices over complaining, grumbling believers as it is sure not a very good witness or a way to get closer to God.

If you know this is you ask God to transfer you into His image to include His speech. Try your best, with God's help, to start off right controlling the words that spew forth from the mouth that is supposed to be spiritual.

PRAYER: I have been at fault in this area Lord and I ask forgiveness. I know Satan is joyful when I fall into his trap of doing this. I choose to let my words bring glory not shame. Help me. In Jesus'  name. Amen.

Preach On

But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark. Matthew 24:37-38

What are your plans for today? Whatever they are go about your day with expectancy of the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. If you are teaching school, keep doing it. If you are a clerk, keep working. Perhaps the CEO of a company. Keep leading and directing. If you are a stay home mom, keep raising your children for the Lord.

For all of us who name the name of Jesus we should be 'preachers' of sorts and be 'preaching on' until Jesus returns. Not everyone will accept this and some may mock you,but our job is to share God's love with those in our circle of influence each and every day. We are not to be ashamed of Jesus. Bow your head even in public and thank Him for your daily bread. Many in the world are hungry. Don't be embarrassed someone is looking cause they probably are. In Mark 8:38 it says "If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when He comes in His Father's glory with the Holy angels."

Go now and remember you are His witness so be able to share about your joy if someone asks. If you don't know Him you can stop right now and ask Him to take control of your life.

PRAYER: Give me your strength to not be a coward when it comes to sharing you with others. Forgive me if I have ever acted ashamed. In Jesus' name. Amen.

He's Coming

He said to them, "It is not for you to know the times or the dates the Father has set by His own authority." Acts 1:7

For years mankind has tried unsuccessfully to predict the end of the world and the coming of Jesus. Any one who knows anything about the word of God can tell you that no one knows or has a clue to His return. Right now with all the events going on in the Middle East many think we are very near. No one knows.

In the meantime we should be living our lives trying to win others to Christ and going about our daily business. Always be ready for He will return at a time you do not expect. Life will continue and prophecy will be fulfilled but still no one knows. We do know He promised He is coming back and He is, so be ready.

Do you know if you were to breathe your last breath on Earth you are going to heaven? If not why not ask Him to be your Lord and savior today. Don't be left behind.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus I look forward some day to being with you in heaven for eternity but in the meantime I need to press on down here and do the work you have set for me to do. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Stop Laughing, Believe It!

Then the Lord said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh and say 'Will I really have a child, now that I am old?' Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year and Sarah will have a son." Genesis 18:13-14

Are we doubting Christians or believing Christians? Good question. Praying occurs then worry starts. Promises are read yet pessimism arises. Are you a person who feels miracles only happened in Jesus day because if you are it is time to transform your thinking. As it says in Jeremiah 1:12 'God's word will be fulfilled.'

Nothing is too hard for our God. He is the creator of everything. By Him we live and move. Why do we think He does not reach down and answer prayers even today? It is time to stop your laughing and unbelief and instead embrace the attitude that believing equals receiving and doubting means we do without.

What is it you are believing God for?

PRAYER: Help me Lord to be a patient waiter as I pray and wait for you to work things out your way for your purposes. I do not want to get in the way of your plan. In Jesus' name. Amen.

A Day of Rest

Remember the Sabbath Day by keeping it Holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. Exodus 20:8-9

Not only is Sunday supposed to be the day set aside to honor and worship God, but it is also designated as a day of rest. As my sister pointed out, this means rest from worries, stress, and problems of life. This is a day for you to not dwell on them and let your mind take a vacation of sorts. It is not just rest from physical labors. When I was a child there were hardly any stores open on Sunday. It was refreshing.

Are you able to not just go to church on Sunday but to let go of the troubles of your world for just one day? God does not intend for us to be constantly burdened. He does not want you stressed at all but so many of us can not trust Him to take care of us. Rest is important for our minds and our bodies. This one day should be set aside to be kept Holy.

What is keeping you from a Sabbath rest?  Did you enjoy it yesterday?

PRAYER: Help me Lord to be able to take one day a week to kick back and relax. I know you set aside the 7th day for rest. After creating the world, you said, "it is good" and you rested. I too need to learn to rest. In Jesus' name. Amen.

His Representative

We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. 2 Corinthians 5:20
In America we have what is called in our government system, The House of Representatives. These are elected by the people to represent us although at times they go their own way sad to say. Here on Earth as a believer we are Christ's representative to non believers. In the same manner some of our elected officials have not set a good example or followed what we wanted them to do, likewise occasionally a 'representative of Christ' has gone astray and needs to remember  who he or she is in Christ.

A representative has the responsibility to represent the people and we are to represent Christ. If you have gone your own way and stumbled cry out to God as he is merciful and will hear you . Your responsibility is very important to show Jesus' love to those around you.

Are you up for the task? How are you doing as 'His representative?"

PRAYER: I want to be a good representative for you in the part of your world I am in daily. Guide my steps, thoughts, and words to do what pleases you. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Be His Light

Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you,who walk in the light of your presence, Lord. Psalm 89:15

When I was a child I loved to sing the song "This Little Light of Mine" and I still think it is a neat song I never outgrow. It paints such a  vivid word picture of what we as a believer are to do. Let your light shine and do not hide it and do not let Satan blow it out.

Ask yourself if you are being a light for Jesus where you go each day. The workplace, your home, running errands, in school.  We are to be able to attest to the love of Jesus to anyone who may ask.

Today Lord I want others to see you through me. Help me show love to those around me no matter how difficult it may be.

PRAYER: I am your sunbeam and your little light Lord. I want your light to shine bright through me so I can proclaim your love to others. In Jesus' name. Amen.

My Appointment With God

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:33

What is on your calendar or to do list for today? If it is like most people it is very crowded with activities. On this list of things that need to be accomplished did you remember to put 'have a quiet time' or is there absolutely no time for that? I know the days I make time for sitting and being still with God first, the day goes much better.

I heard once that the word 'busy' could be turned into an acronym 'Being Under Satan's Yoke' and oh isn't that the truth? If Satan keeps you so busy with what we feel is so urgent. before you know it God is pushed aside.

Do you desire to be with God each morning? If you do not perhaps pray and ask God to help you desire Him more. We need Jesus in our lives each and every day. The closer we are to God the less the struggles of daily life will weigh us down.

PRAYER: I thank you Lord for my time alone with you. I know it breaks your heart when I rush into my day and do not give you any time. Forgive me and help me not judge others but only concern myself for my quiet time. In Jesus' name. Amen.

If Only You Had Been Here God!

That you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.Matthew 5:45

Why is it that when a tragedy occurs, and especially results in an untimely death, often we hear, "where was God"? He has not gone anywhere. Wonder why folks don't get angry and shout at Satan and say "why did you cause that car wreck" or "why did you tempt him to drink"? Things happen in life and God knows the big picture because He is God.  People have free will and sometimes that free will creates accidents. You certainly don't want to go up to someone who has just had a death in family and say "all things work together for good you know" as that is not what they need to hear.

During the grieving process allow the person to show emotions. It is okay to cry. And cry they will often for months and possibly years to come. Trust that God will use everything for His intended purposes. We do not understand everything. Sometimes people turn their back on God, church, or religion because of the hurt and anger they feel after a prayer did not save  their loved one. When this happens only our enemy rejoices because he has this individual mad at God.

Wherever you are at today in wondering why did someone die so young, why did God not save them just keep praying. Some day it will all be revealed. In the meantime reach out to others who hurt but do not turn your back on God.

PRAYER: I need you in my life. Sometimes I do not understand why a baby dies at birth or a teen gets killed in a wreck. These things are beyond my comprehension. Help me Lord to reach out to comfort those who are hurting. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Word Power

Let your conversation be always full of grace,
seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. Colossians 4:6

Words can make a person or break them. Once you say something it can not be retracted. It is very important to think before speaking but how often does that happen? I know there are times I let my emotions do the talking and oh how I wish I had not.

If someone is using angry or hurtful words to you it is best to ignore them because responding back will most likely result in a fight. How many homicides reported on the news were probably started with angry words. Satan loves hurtful words and he loves anger. He really loves it if he can get a believer to not think before they speak.

Today before you start your day stop and pray that your words would only bring glory to those who hear them.

PRAYER: Today I choose to let my words show your love to those around me. Give me strength when confronted by less than peaceful people and help me respond in love. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Jesus: The King of Rejection

He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open His mouth;he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,so he did not open his mouth. Isaiah 53:7

Take it from one who knows. Rejection hurts. Probably all of us have experienced rejection in some form. Maybe not being picked to be on a team at recess in grade school. Perhaps not getting invited to a certain party or wedding. Maybe being let go at work. Breaking up with a boyfriend or girlfriend or worse yet, divorce. Rejection comes in many forms.

Jesus was the person who was rejected yet never got mean or tried to get even. He had to hurt. He experienced all we did. Can you imagine people yelling "Crucify Him! crucify Him!?" He endured much for us yet many turned their back on Him. He was ready, willing, and able to forgive.

Are you the victim of rejection or perhaps the instigator? No matter what, you can be healed, set free and forgiven. You only need cry out to Him!

PRAYER: Dear Lord thanks for coming to this Earth so that we might have life. Whenever I get to whining about my plight I need to remember you endured much more. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Eat or Starve! Once a Week??

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they shall be filled. Matthew 5:6
How often do you eat every day? Normally this is three meals a day if you live in a prosperous country and are employed. There are those who eat way more than they need to and then those who starve themselves to try to lose weight.
Imagine if you will, consuming only one tiny meal a day by choice. You would be very hungry for sure. Our spiritual body needs nourishment too or it will wither and die. By this I am referring to 'feeding' yourself the word of God on a daily basis. How do you expect to grow in Christ unless you take in His 'food' ,the Bible, each and every day. The opposition of course is Satan who will help you think of many excuses why you are too busy or worse yet, why the Bible is full of errors and is not for today so you do not bother with it at all.
You need to read God's word daily if you expect to be able to grow. Plants need water to grow. We need food to grow. Do not neglect the most important thing for eternal life and that is feeding daily on His words.
PRAYER: Lord I am sorry when I have put other things before you. I know it is vitally important to grow in Christ and I plan to stop allowing Satan to talk me out of studying the Bible each day. In Jesus' name. Amen.

I Love That Person, And That Person, And That Person Too!

Do not judge, or you too will be judged. Matthew 7:1
It is easy to look at someone and not know their 'story' and to form an opinion or judgment about them. I have done it and I am trying to stop it with God's help. One solution to it is to go through your day and when you tend to want to be judgmental instead silently say "I love that person" and so on. Try to look at all people through the eyes of Jesus and with compassion. If we are naming the name of Jesus and are to be His hands and feet here on Earth then we certainly do not want to go about our day being silently critical and judging our fellow man.
Maybe you were brought up in a home where there was a critical spirit. If so recognize that and confess it and then it is time to move beyond that. Do not use the past as an excuse for everything. I know it is hard to be with people who constantly find fault with others and you certainly do not want to be one of those. Maybe you do it and are not even aware of it.
Try to start each day out and make up your mind that nothing bad will come from your mouth, and  that you will control your thought life as well. Satan wants you to be critical and condemn as then you do not make a very good example for Christ. Go into the world today and love others and speak kindly of them.

PRAYER: I want to be more like you Jesus in what I think, say, and do. Forgive me if I have ever formed judgments against my fellow man. It is not my place to judge but to love. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Scab Picker

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ, God forgave you. Ephesians 4:32

When you have a scab on your body if you continue to pick at it, it will never heal and may even become infected. With relationship hurts, if we keep 'picking' and talking about the issues and do not move past them, it is like a scab that will never heal. Don't keep fighting and picking at each other but learn to let things go and let them heal.

Is there something in your life you have been picking at that you know you need to let go and let God heal it? Trust Him and cry out to Him. Don't allow problems to fester and become so major that they are out of control.

Release your problem to the Lord. He can and does heal those 'emotional scabs' we continually can not let go of.

PRAYER: There are times I can not seem to let things go and just keep picking and picking at them.  Help me Lord as I seek to let go and trust you to heal wounds in my life. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Dig Deep

Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. Colossians 3:13
Forgiveness is a hard thing to do. Sometimes it is necessary to forgive people even when they are unaware they have hurt you or are at fault. You can dwell on issues and things that have been done to you or you can choose to move on and open your heart and allow God to transform you. It is hard to not forgive and to walk with the Lord at the same time.
In order to truly forgive you have to purpose in your heart that you will not allow past problems to fester and if a person does not even know they are wrong forgive them in your heart anyway. Ask God to help you mend relationships and not harbor bad feelings.  You have to move on beyond hurts and pains and let Jesus have them.

Today whatever it is that has been bothering you first pray and ask God to help you release this person to Him and let you move beyond resentment and ill will.

PRAYER: I have been hurt by people, sometimes people very close to me who do not even realize it. I need to get beyond the feelings of anger and hatred to showing love and forgiveness regardless.Teach me your ways Lord. In Jesus' name. Amen.

You Have Need Of Patience

Wait for the Lord, be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord. Psalm 27:14

As I sat gazing at a lady in her van at a coffee shop, myself being inside by the register, as we both waited and waited and waited some more for our order, I simply smiled at her and shrugged. Why get upset? Our world is so much for instant everything. That is not God's way. When things don't happen fast or according to our time table it is easy to give up or get mad.

This is not what God wants. Throughout the Bible are stories of waiting. Man's way is always rushing and getting things now. Unfortunately or maybe fortunately, God does not operate according to our rules. I know I am thankful for that! His plan is better and sometimes it involves waiting.

Do you have a problem with trusting God and waiting? Just as a farmer waits for a crop or lady  waits for her newborn baby, we too need to develop patience so as to not wreck God's plan.

PRAYER:Lord I am thankful for the times I learned to wait and want to forget the times I messed things up by not. Thanks for guiding me along the way. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Grinding Teeth...Stop It!

There will be weeping there and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God but you yourselves thrown out. Luke 13:28

Do any of you live with a person who grinds their teeth at night or have you been told you are the one who makes this awful noise? In my case a few years ago it was me. My husband said he was surprised I still had any teeth left it was so loud.

Did you know for those unfortunate souls who do not make it into the heavenly kingdom because they rejected Jesus it says it is not going to be a good thing at all. It is not going to be some cute little nonstop drunk fest  but instead eternal fire, weeping, grinding teeth, agony. Can you imagine burning forever? It is pretty bad when you burn your finger on a stove but that eventually heals. Some feel this is a big joke or fairy tale. Each of us has a choice to live for Jesus or turn your back on Him. He does not willingly want people to perish.

Have you made a decision to let Jesus be Lord of your life? If not why not stop now and say this simple prayer. 'Lord Jesus I need you in my life. Forgive me for ignoring you and going my own way. I want to live for you and serve you. Come into my heart and make me into a new creature.'

PRAYER: I need you every hour or most gracious Lord. Temptations will come and help me resist them. Help me clearly be convicted of things that displease you. Break my. Heart by what breaks yours. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Close Calls

I thank my God every time I remember you. Philippians 1:3

Recently as I sat down to write and turned on my computer, Facebook stuff popped up. I read for first  post where my daughter in law had been hit by a car while riding her bike to work that morning. After a call to my son I was cool, she is okay but 3000 miles away. After I waited, and tried to get to writing, the tears came. I was so thankful she was okay. For a brief moment I experienced the panic that sets in when a family member finds out something is wrong with another family member. Both my son and his wife are medical professionals so deal with hurting families all the time and now they were the hurting family.

Have you gone through the unimaginable where you are enjoying a wonderful day then comes the dreaded phone call? This call changes your day and sometimes your life. A car accident. A son or daughter injured or killed in the war. A parent has died. Whatever the news we are never really ready to have it happen. There is never a good time.

The first thing to try to do is remain as calm as possible and to pray. Prayer has a way of soothing your soul in the toughest of times. Just try to get alone and be calm with God and let Him do the rest. Above all be thankful for those around you daily!

PRAYER: Lord you are my great comfort in the trials of life. When the unexpected happens you are there. Oh Lord I thank you for watching over me and my family. I praise your name forever. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Continuing To Laugh

A cheerful heart is good medicine but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. Proverbs 17:22

I have often heard that laughter is the best medicine. When you are feeling down,  a good laugh always helps. But what happens when the person making us laugh has a death in her family, like her husband? This is the recent story of Christian funny lady Chonda Pierce, who I have had the pleasure to meet in person in Nashville as well as David her late husband, at a writers conference in Kentucky. When the person who causes us to chuckle is experiencing a loss how do we surround them and help them to get laughter back in their life? Perhaps they feel they will never laugh again.

Grief will come to all of us whether we are a professional comedian or not. For those who do make a living in comedy, they may feel like they just can't do it anymore. First of all, our deceased loved ones would not want us crumpling up into a little ball and doing nothing. That would be Satan's plan. We have to laugh in Satan's face and tell him he is not going to stop you from shining for Jesus, whether sad or not.

If you recently experienced a loss in your family or a close friend just cry out to Jesus. It does take time to heal, but heal you will. We who are left behind must carry on and go on. Wake up each day and try to find one thing to make you smile. If you are the comforter of this person just be there for them and pray for them.

PRAYER: When I am weak Lord make me strong. Give me the words to speak to those who grieve. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Stinking Rags!

All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags. We all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind, our sins sweep us away. Isaiah 64:6

Sometimes in life we can possibly become pretty high and mighty and less than humble. Maybe we think 'our' church is best or we are 'too good' to do thus and such. This is called being self righteous. The word 'self' alone should set off alarm bells. Self is not to be on the throne. When self takes over then it is hard to find God.

Each of us need to be careful to not fall into the sin of self righteousness. Back in the 80's I was called self righteous by someone and it hurt my feelings so bad. I called a Christian toll free number I saw on TV to ask what it meant. What an awakening. I hoped to learn from that and try to not fall into a pattern of acting better than others ever again.

Every day when you awaken, try to go to God before the television or other distractions. Spend time in prayer and ask God to reveal what in your life needs to be tweaked. Stinking, filthy rags are something I want no part of anymore.

PRAYER: Forgive me Lord if I ever unintentionally acted better than someone. Help me to be your humble servant and shine for you. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Priorities In Life

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.Colossians 3:2

Each morning what is the first thing you do after getting up and having breakfast? Do you run and get on Facebook and check everyone's status? Perhaps read the morning paper? Turn on the television to a talk show? Race out the door to work?

Maybe deep down you know you are not truly putting God first. You try but all these other things seen to lure you away to capture your attention. Maybe you are distant from God and mad at Him over something that happened in life. It takes real discipline to spend time with the Lord each day. The enemy of our souls, Satan, is a master of getting you distracted. He will get you running to all sorts of things and try to squeeze out God. After all, if there is no time for God each day you are not strengthened to handle each days challenges. Don't be fooled to think Sunday is enough. Satan is the one who makes you make up excuses about why you do not need God or need church.

Start now and challenge yourself to not do anything else until you have spent time with God. Facebook can wait!

PRAYER: I love you Lord but sometimes I do not act like it. Forgive me for ignoring you some days. I'm trying to get better and I need you every hour. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Problem Solver

I can do all this through Him who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13
A new business sprang up in my town with a sign the same as my title. It does not indicate it is a counseling service but simply has a phone number to call. Interesting approach to being an entrepreneur. But what kind of problems do you suppose people will call in with? Leaky faucet? Disobedient children? Abusive spouse? Problem weeds? Out of control pets? Mechanical problems? I am not sure and I certainly hope the person on the other end of the line is prepared to do referrals.

All of us have problems in life. They may not occur daily but things are bound to occur that will be put in the 'problem' category. It is how we deal with problems that matters. Do we melt down or do we realize 'this to shall pass'?  God can and will see you through if you cry out to Him. First thing to ask is if you are living  for Him or do you just give Him lip service and one hour on Sunday? You can handle things better when you have been equipped by studying  God's manual for life, The Bible. If you have not made a regular habit of reading God's word for whatever reason, why not change that today. If you are uncertain where to begin just start in the book of John. Also Psalms and Proverbs  and ideal places to read. The whole Bible is ideal but saying "I will read through the Bible" may not necessarily be the best method as you have a worthy goal but may be just doing it for a goal. Do a subject study. Just ask God to give you a hunger to know Him better. When you keep away from God's word you are making Satan so happy.

Today start calling out to God not just in problem times but all the time.

PRAYER: You are my Lord and my God. I thirst for you in this dry and hungry land. Father I know you can give peace in the midst of problems. In Jesus' name. Amen.
