Fear Monster

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6

There are different types of fear. Some are healthy and some unhealthy. Recently I was in Dallas, Texas which has seemed to be in the news a good deal because of the Ebola scare. I was in the airport but I was not fearful. Ebola is a deadly disease but we can not be thinking we are going to contract it just because we flew in a plane to Dallas. Some people are deathly afraid of a thunderstorm. Other fears would be fear of snakes or perhaps a bear attack. What better time to discuss fear than on Halloween.

Fears can paralyze you to the point you stay inside your house. But then you might  be afraid your roof will cave in. The point being life can not be led by being fearful of every turn you make. You will drive yourself crazy being afraid of everything. At Halloween people seem to delight in  scaring others. Vampire and murder movies abound in the movie theaters. Some say it is a holiday for Satan since occult activities seem to be prevalent more at this time as well. Sometimes people think fear is fun but it can border on being a problem where the individual needs to seek out counseling.

Whatever your fear, know that you can unlearn fears and have God's perfect peace. A life of fear keeps you from fully trusting God to take care of you. Why not run to Him today and trust Him to lead you and guide you through the things that normally would make you run and hide?

PRAYER: When I am afraid I will trust in you Lord. I have my strength and my hope in you and the enemies schemes will not paralyze me with fear. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Helpful Not Hurtful

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. Ephesians  4:29

The things we say are very important and how we say them. We probably all have heard the saying "if you don't have anything good to say don't say anything at all."  Ever had the experience with what you said being taken totally the wrong way or as they say , out of context? Once the words are out of our mouth it is too late. It is so easy to talk but not so easy to think before we speak.

As this verse in Ephesians says make sure nothing unwholesome comes out of your mouth. This would not just mean cursing and things immoral but would mean words that could hurt or offend as well.

Why not try to see if today everything you say or even think is a good, wholesome, pure thought. This might mean you have to not read the newspaper or watch television or even listen to the radio for that matter unless it is a Christian station.  Discipline yourself to thinking kind, uplifting, encouraging and wholesome thoughts. See if you don't feel better in the long run.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus I am in this world but I do not want to get caught up in the world and its' thinking and actions. Help me discipline myself to thinking good and speaking kindness to everyone I come into contact with. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Code of Conduct

Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel. Philippians 1:27

I served in the United States Army and we had a Uniformed Code Of Military Justice known as the UCMJ and a Code of Conduct to abide by. Military members are under strict discipline and must adhere to certain standards of conduct in order to protect this nation from enemies both foreign and domestic.

Life has a Code of Conduct too and that is called The Holy Bible.  If we read it and do what it says we can stay out of trouble. The problem is too many do their own thing and go their own way.  If you adhere to the guidelines set up by our Heavenly Father life will be much better. Testing the waters and getting involved in a sinful existence only takes you away from God and closer to Satan. Many do not want to hear that name but he is not a Halloween character in a little red suit but is roaming the earth with his demons seeking to destroy, deceive, kill, and steal. He is a master liar and loves to weave a web of deceit and captures many people to go right along with his cunning schemes.

Don't be fooled. Open you Bible and read it daily. Know what is right and wrong and stay on the path that is narrow as broad is the path that leads to destruction.

PRAYER: Lord I love you word and it is my desire to know it and follow you. Help me be alert to the enemy schemes and avoid them. In Jesus' name. Amen.

S.W.A.T. For The Lord

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Ephesians 6:10-12
The acronym S.W.A.T. means 'Special Weapons and Tactics' and refers to the special teams in law enforcement called out in special situations to handle complex issues. I was in a local coffee shop one day when a group of them came in for coffee on way to training no doubt. They were in their camouflage and had gun holsters on and their badges.
As a believer we too are on a S.W.A.T. Team for the Lord. Our special weapon is prayer and claiming the promises in the Bible. We are armed and dangerous and with the armor of God can defeat the attacks of our arch enemy Satan who roams the Earth trying to destroy us. So many fall into his trap because they are unaware of his schemes and deceit.
Most people own a Bible. It is your greatest weapon against the devil but has to be more than a coffee table decoration. Use it daily to fight the lies of the enemy.
PRAYER: I thank you for the privilege of having a Bible and actually several Bibles. They will do me no good if I just look at them. I choose to get the power inside by opening and reading it daily. Satan will attempt to get me making excuses but I refuse to listen to him. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Backing Away

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:18
If you are blessed with a personality that does not bug anyone be grateful and thankful. After 60 years of life I am still working on trying to be friends with everyone which is virtually impossible. When a close friend who is like a sister almost takes her friendship away though it really is painful. No one is prepared for something like that.

Perhaps a personality quirk drove her bonkers and she broke and could take no more. Who knows. I am always grateful for friends God has blessed me with over the years. I have learned lots from them and grown from the friendships. I have many lifelong friends who are always by my side. When you get blindsided by friends sort of disowning you it is shocking and hurtful.

If you are there today with me and have gone through this do not be mad at these people but pray for them. You may have done something and or they may have a deeper issue that is bothering them and you sent them over the edge so to speak. Continue to love and pray for them but leave them alone. Maybe God will reignite that friendship flame some day and maybe He won't. Move on and give thanks

PRAYER: Lord I thank you for the friends in my life since I was born in 1953. You have indeed showered me with blessings. Forgive me when I have irritated people and teach me how to not do that. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Staying In Shape

For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. 1 Timothy 4:8
I love to work out and I am thankful all my body parts are pretty much in working order. I know a simple sickness or accident could change that overnight. But in the meantime I am thankful for God's blessing of being able to run, jump, hop, dance, skip and walk without trouble. It is important no matter what your age to keep moving and active as much as possible. If you don't use your muscles they get flabby and if you do not use your joints they may freeze up.
Similarly with our spiritual life we can become lethargic. Everything else becomes more important than spending time with God each day. Some excuses would be "We know we should but I just have to get out the door. I used to love to but God hurt me and took my friend. Church seems boring and the people are phony. I have other things I enjoy doing on Sunday." I am certain you can add to the list or maybe you are reading this and you are away from the things of the Lord and are more on the devils' side than God's side. You think you do not need to do life with God.
God is calling you back. He is knocking at your hearts door. He wants you to strengthen your spiritual muscles so you can fight the onslaught of the enemies attacks that are coming now and will continue to come. Do not go into the world spiritually flabby. Work out each day with God.
PRAYER: Draw me close to you Lord and never let me go. Bring my family members back that have strayed from your teaching and restore their first love for you. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Epicenter

'Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.'Isaiah 41:10
Recently in the city of Dallas Ebola struck. Widespread panic set in primarily caused by the news media. Guess what? I also was in Dallas this month and was not a bit worried about it. If you constantly feed your mind on fearful topics naturally you will start to be afraid. I started to read the free daily paper at my hotel then threw it away. All it was doing was inciting fear in article after article.

You may not be scared you will contract Ebola but there may be something else that you allow to consume your life. Fear paralyzes people. Don't allow yourself to fall victim to this. Fear can stop you in your tracks. News flash, fear is not from God. God offers peace. The enemy is the one who loves to scare us. In order to stay peaceful and unafraid feed your mind on good things and do not dwell on those issues that make you a nail biter.

Concerning being in Dallas, I was there in the epicenter of the Ebola concern in the US and I was there with the Moms in Prayer ministry for their 30th birthday celebration. Women from 44 countries flew in. No one was fearing dying of Ebola. This event was planned over two years ago and God knew that 1300 praying women would be here in the center of it all. Faith over fear wins every time.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus I choose to separate myself from those things that incite fear in me. When I start to be afraid I will turn to you and your word not the newspaper. Help me have discipline to be peaceful. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Don't Base Your Worth On 'Likes'

The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: "I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness." Jeremiah 31:3
Wow 113 likes! That must be some person or quite a post. If you are all tied up in your worth based on Facebook then you need to know that 'likes' don't make you better or worse and you should not base your life on them. Forget about it and charge on. I was stuck on it for a time being then thought to myself how stupid it was for me to be checking this status as the only one who truly matters whether they like me is Jesus. My worth is not based on if someone likes a Facebook post or not. That type of living can be superficial at best. Let's say someone has 16 likes and you have none. There you go comparing then getting feelings hurt. Over what? Something really in the big scheme of things that matters little if at all. Or maybe you could have lots of likes and start feeling popular and superior.
The one person you should trying to be impressing already loves you no matter what. That is our Lord Jesus Christ. Even when we slam the door in His face and ignore Him He still is there loving you unconditionally. He does not need Facebook to communicate this love to you. You are very special to Him and are fearfully and wonderfully made. Your life has meaning and a purpose and He does 'LIKE' you and lots!
So next time you catch yourself looking to see which of your Facebook friends 'likes' something you posted, just remember that Jesus likes you yes He does, for my Bible tells me so.
PRAYER: Lord I need self control to not always be going checking my status on Facebook. Every time I am tempted too help me maybe pick up the Bible and read it instead. It holds much more value than my 'likes'. In Jesus' name.AMEN.

Running From God

Start children off on the way they should go,and even when they are old they will not turn from it. Proverbs 22:6
What causes a person who was madly in love and passionate about Jesus as a teen to literally run away from God? Many parents fear that when their child goes off to the big liberal university that all they taught will go down the drain. Professors start teaching things that are totally contrary to what the church or parents taught then intellectualism takes over and transforms this once godly young man or woman into something the mom and dad never thought they would see. All the truth of God's word is now challenged by their all knowing child.

Parents if this describes your child please do not despair. Many have walked this confusing and lonely path often times alone, fearing sharing it would change a person's opinion of them. Stuff happens in life and parents have 18 years to impact their son or daughter for the Lord. Nagging does not help but only the Holy Spirit and lots of patience.

If you are on this journey now just stay on your knees and know God is working even when it does not seem so. Resist the urge to "preach" as it further alienated the adult child. God is in control and the story is not over.

PRAYER: God you are good and your hear my prayers. Guide those with young children to mold their children for Christ because the world won't. Give me patience as I wait for changes. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Grumbler?

Do everything without grumbling or arguing. Philippians 2:14

Are you kidding? You think I can do everything without a single complaint or grumble? How is that possible? Sure things upset us and we react to those things at times. The point is,do not get caught up griping about everything that does not go the way you thought it should. If you do, you have fallen into the trap of being like everyone else. Why get so upset about a wrong order at a restaurant? Perhaps your service was bad. I am sure you can come up with a list of things you maybe have grumbled about in your past.

What to do to stop this behavior? Try thinking of good things or happy things and make believe Jesus is with you. He is you know. There may be some so accustomed to griping because they grew up around it and are not aware they picked it up. Try to make yourself aware of how you treat others and catch any slip up when it comes to being a complainer.

Before you know it you will be able to turn the other cheek on many things that previously upset you and will be showing more of God's love to those around you.

PRAYER: Forgive me Lord when I have become a griper or just looked for bad things. Help me look for good things in my fellow man. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Bad Company Corrupts Morals

Do not be misled: "Bad company corrupts good character." 1 Corinthians 15:33

Parents always delight when their children choose good friends. While they are still under your roof from ages birth to 5, it is pretty easy to control friendships but once they enter the "world" it is up to you to pray and for them to choose wisely. This is not to say parents of young people should sit around fretting about relationships but indeed your job is to pray and keep praying. Even when the picture may look bleak God is not done yet.

Bad friends can lead youth into immoral activity, drunken binges, drugs, pornography, and a life of crime and take them away from their church upbringing. Many a heartbroken parent has wondered what happened and why their son or daughter chose what they did. God uses all things to draw us back to Him. Sometimes a person might have to be flat on his back before he bothers to look up to the Savior.

Do not be misled. You can not continue to live a life away from God and full of sin and get away with it.  The lusts of the flesh may entice but my friend run fast and far away from them.

PRAYER: Lord I need you every hour. Lord I pray for those I may know who are disinterested in you. Lead them to the cross. In Jesus' name. Amen.

First Things First

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousnessfor they will be filled. Matthew 5:6

When you awaken each morning what is the first thing you think of doing? Turning on the morning show? Reading the newspaper? Checking your Facebook page for likes? Going out for a morning walk or run? Hey what about God? He is the very first thing that should come to mind if you are a believer. Spending quality time with Him daily is what helps you grow and puts your spiritual armor on for the day.

Have you lost your first love and that being for the Lord? Have other 'priorities' squeezed Him to the back of the bus? Maybe it is time to take account of your life? Perhaps you are hanging with the wrong groups of friends who do not love the Lord and may in fact make fun of 'religious' people. Whatever the reason, God is calling you back to Him. Stop running away. Maybe you are involved in an activity you know deep down in your heart displeases the Lord even though the world condones it.

Friend it is time to stop what you are doing and take account of your life. God does love you no matter what but He wants to have fellowship with you and not just for a tiny little 60 minutes on Sunday. Ours lives get so busy we often times forget about the one who gave us our life and put us where we are. Run back to Him today!

PRAYER: Father God I love you and there have been times when my busy day squeezed you out. I know it is wrong. I know I need you each and every day. Lord my desire is to stay on track from this day forward. In Jesus' name. Amen.

My Money......Crazy Stock Market!!

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 1 Timothy 6:17
Recently the stock market plummeted and panicked investors watched thousands of dollars disappear into thin air. Of course in a upturn things could get better. There is nothing wrong with saving but you must remember to not trust in your savings, your stocks, your gold, or your 401k.
Things happen and wealth disappears. Sometimes greedy tyrants take it away to try to control us. The point is everything we have belongs to God. It is He who gave us the power to gain wealth. Just do not freak out when the market crashes and don't live above your means. Be good stewards of what is entrusted to you. Share and tithe as well.
Why not stop and give thanks to God for all your abundance. This means whether you live in a tiny home mansion. Just know God is in control and He will take care of you.
PRAYER: Thanks Lord for all you have blessed me with. Help me to look for legitimate ways to help those going through hard times. In Jesus' name. Amen.

The New Rude

But all things must be done properly and in an orderly manner. 1 Corinthians 14:40

As I sat recently in a doctors office I was chuckling under my breath with the way rude behavior has been accepted. A lady was non stop on her cell phone doing her business right there in the waiting room. Sure we did not have phones back in the day, but certain things are common courtesy. Many think anything goes.

Believe it or not God likes good manners. He likes kindness. He likes it when we think of others before ourselves. I understand there may be times when public chatter is unavoidable but all of us must try to be kind and considerate thinking of others first.

Are you in a habit of putting others before yourself? There are many ways to do this. Something as simple as not trying to get your way on a date or day out with friends. See what the other person prefers. Also open a door or two for folks you meet during your day. Keep a smile on your face and try to be grateful. Go into the day making an effort to not let the 'rude monster' rear its' ugly head.

PRAYER: Father God I seek to emulate you as I go about my day. I want to be kind, friendly, and polite. I know I can with you guiding me.  In Jesus' name.Amen.

Just Read It!

For the director of music. Of David. The fool says in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good. Psalm 14:1
There is a famous athletic shoe company with the motto "Just Do It" which some marketing geniuses dreamed up and people can't get out of their head. I say the same thing is true for not just physical exercise but spiritual as well. When it comes to God's word, the Bible, "just read it", with no excuses.

No theological degree is required. Just the desire to know the truth and be more Christlike. There was a time in my life when the Bible was not exciting then it came alive after I was "born again". The word of God is so powerful. That is why evil forces try to abolish it and why Christians are persecuted in many parts of the world. There is power in the name of Jesus and in His word.

Don't be fooled. You never know if today is your last on Earth. A car wreck, tornado, or  illness could suddenly end your life. Make sure you do know Jesus. He is knocking at your hearts door so let Him in.

PRAYER: I love you Jesus. I  so thankful for your word and the power it contains. No wonder Satan tries to blind so many to wanting to read it. I will press on to know you better. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Distracted From God

For those who are evil will be destroyed, but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land. Psalm 37:9

It is so very easy to shove anything Christian entirely out of our day. It is almost as if we have to be intentional in really putting God first. Facebook beckons us to check our 'likes', the morning show is always so interesting, and of course you have to check your local weather. Then if you work, after you do all these things and shower , there is no quality time left for the Lord. Out the door you go!

I feel many are misled somehow into thinking Christian automatically comes with the title of American or church member. Sadly that is not the case. Things that are a priority to us are always first place. Many find the idea of reading the Bible dull and think perhaps Sunday is the day they wear their 'Christian cap'. To have a heart like Jesus time must be spent with Him and you get to know Him. If you want to know your friends you make time for them. Likewise to know JESUS spend time in His word.

Don't continue to be distracted by things of the world that don't really matter. Purpose to make JESUS first in your heart and in your day!

PRAYER: Lord you are good all the time and all the time you are good. Thanks for loving me even when I ignore you. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Anger.....Part Two

In your anger do not sin and do not let the sun go down while you are still angry. Ephesians 4:26

In writing about anger yesterday I did want to elaborate just a bit. It is good to be angry at sin and evil. It is good to be mad at things like ISIS beheading Christians. It is good to be what is known as righteously angry or indignant. Righteous anger could be when the church starts to accept and condone sinful behavior. People do not roll over and say nothing but speak out for truth and righteousness. When a Christian is angry at say a clerk in a store, he handles things hopefully in a kinder gentler way than his or her non Christian counterpart.

We get mad occasionally at those we love and obviously this type of anger needs to be nipped in the bud  and dealt with in order to not end up in divorce court. When you are the guilty party go to the person and ask for forgiveness. Heal the wound before it festers and grows out of control. Anger has to be kept under control.

There were examples when Jesus was angry such as when He overturned the tables of the money changers in Matthew 21:12.  The main thing is get control of your anger before it gets control of you.

PRAYER: Lord when I become angry help me Lord to control my anger and cry out to you for help. If I have offended someone or hurt them help me be able to go admit it and ask forgiveness. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Why Be Angry?

Because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. James 1:20

I have a dear friend who used to tell me to "blow it off" meaning basically to let something go. When you are agitated about something if you do not learn to release your anger, it can explode and become much worse. That is probably what we see on our nightly news when an angry person or crowd just could not and did not 'turn the other cheek' thus boiling over into confrontation and violence.

Anger does not produce anything good. It destroys relationships, breaks things, hurts, and glorifies the enemy Satan. Sure people are going to be upset at times but it is how you deal with it that matters. Don't allow anger to send you over the edge.

Ask God to help you maintain peace and joy when you really don't feel like it. You can master the anger monster.

PRAYER: Lord I love the feeling of peacefulness and do not like conflict. Give me strength when agitated to deal with it in a Christlike manner. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Christmas Is Coming!

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

Halloween and Thanksgiving are not even over and merchants start to decorate with the red and green of Christmas. It is so tiring at times to see this wonderful sacred holiday put into some sort of rat race to get ready and all the while maybe forgetting what it is all about.

Every day we should celebrate Jesus, and not just on Christmas. What if the only time any of your
friends or family wanted anything to do with you was one day a year on your birthday? It would be a sad and lonely life. How do you suppose Jesus feels when His birthday is made into a commercial freak show and that is the only time many people even pay attention to Him perhaps at a candlelight vigil at church.

Spend time alone with God in His word daily. Make God an everyday habit not just a Christmas ritual. A couple months are remaining so why not make sure Jesus is first, truly first each day!

PRAYER: Thanks for the miracle of Christmas and what it means. Help me not to get caught up in the side of it that forgets about you. In Jesus' name. Amen.

One, Two, Three! Are You Ready?

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27

I fulfilled a dream of something I had thought about doing since I was 23. I tandem jumped from 14000 feet out of a perfectly good airplane! Yes that is right. I am not crazy but wanted to do something that really took courage and with God's help and lots of prayers I succeeded. Guess what, although petrified at first, I liked it and may go again one day!

That particular day I had many praying for me and such a supernatural peace came over me which I can not describe. I smiled all the way down, no joke. It was a very surreal experience. I just had to decide to do it and go for it. Once we sat on the edge of the doorway exit of the plane dangling my legs over the side, the instructor asked if I was ready then he said "one, two, three" then out we went flying through the air at 120 miles per hour so they said.

Is there something you have been hesitant to do for whatever reason? It may not be skydiving but something much less risky but still you need to have courage to go forward. Let God be your strength and source of power.

PRAYER: My hope and trust is indeed in you Lord. You watch over me. Your plans for me are wonderful. Give me courage to do what it is I have been fearing. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Five F's

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Matthew 5:6

What is really important in your life because whatever it is, is what you carve out time for? For me it is faith, family, friends, fitness and fun. When something means something to you then you make time for it or them.  For instance, if it is important to stay in shape then you make time to workout. If friends are important then you show yourself friendly.  If family is important you put them first and spend time with them. If fun is important the you go do something fun and laugh. Finally if your faith in God is important you will daily spend time with Him and not just one tiny hour on Sunday. God is not a show for one hour but should be a lifestyle.

Many wounded people are mad at God. They blame Him for not saving a friend or family member. Never do they get angry at Satan but always the Lord. Church is boring, and he,y there are more fun things to do on Sunday, after all it is your only free day. If I am describing you when it comes to not desiring God anymore or maybe you never did, do you desire for that to change? Satan loves it when he can get those who once walked with Jesus to turn their backs on Him. The more you do it the easier it is to say yes to the devil and no to God.

Today search your heart and see what is important. If you want to have Jesus firmly in your life well then ask Him. Make your schedule so that He comes first before anything else.

PRAYER: Today Lord I choose to ignore the busyness of life which seems to press on us the minute we get up each day. I choose to ignore the enemies distractions which keep me from loving you. Forgive me Lord. I choose you first. Inn Jesus' name. Amen.

You Believe That Stuff?

For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:18

Why are we on Earth? Why were we created?  It was to glorify God. Everything we say and do should draw people from all walks of life closer to the savior.

If you are experiencing a down moment in your life, God uses all things for His purposes. He does not cause the tragedy to occur, but can work through things to bring you closer to the Lord. Deaths of a loved one seem to be one of the biggest event that lead people to turn their back on God.  Why God why? Babies die, teens are killed in accidents, thirty something's die from cancer, and on it goes. With life comes death. No one knows when or how. We are to live life to the fullest and not sit around worrying, fearing, or pondering our demise or that of a person close to us.

Don't turn your back on God and don't neglect His word. Many people who claim God is first place in their life would have a hard time proving that if they were arrested for being a Christian and had to go to court to prove it. How would they know? Because you go to church one hour on Sunday? Try again.

Today do not harden your heart. If you are far from Him it is you who made it that way.

PRAYER: Lord God I love your word. Forgive me for the days I neglect it and rush into my day without you. I choose today and every day to read my Bible. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Die Daily To Self

I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily. 1 Corinthians 15:31

Self is on the throne in 2014 here in America. With the new "selfies" we have become self obsessed. Commercials on television tout taking care of yourself. We become self worshippers more than God worshippers. Hey do not get me wrong,I have taken a 'selfie' or two but the whole point is our culture encourages putting ourselves on display. If you are a parent of a pre teen or teen it is essential to get control of this.

In 2 Timothy 3:1-2 it says "But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days.People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents" and it continues in the verses that follow. Are any of these things occurring in today's' world?

To die daily to self is to make an intentional act of putting God and others first. Don't think of only yourself but think how you can help your fellow man. This may go contrary to what the world around you wants. Try it and see if you don't feel better.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus the world around me has many needs. Help me to not be selfish and self centered but to look around for ways to die to self daily. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Keep Quiet

But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceeds blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. James 3:8-10

No man can control the tongue is quite the understatement! Everyone has an opinion. I have to chuckle when I recall a humorous comment made to me in a Bible study I co-led back in the early 90's. This girl says "I love you to death Sister Miller, but you are mighty opinionated." That can be good or bad. We never want our comments or opinions to stir up strife among friends. Sometimes better just to keep opinions to ourself. Some things are better left unsaid. Words can cause tremendous strife and division.

Controlling the tongue is a major problem for many people and as this verse indicates "no man can tame it". We certainly can get into the word and study scriptures on the mouth and our words we can get a better grasp on being careful with our speech.

Examine yourself and see what you need to do in order to take control of the words you speak. Don't let blessing and cursing flow from the same mouth.

PRAYER: I love you Lord and you want me to love others. Sometimes I have not done that or spoken poorly of someone. Forgive me Lord as that does not show the world I am a follower of you. In Jesus' name.Amen.

This Means You!

Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister or judges them speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it. James 4:11

Do any of these scenarios describe you? Gossiping about someone to include an "innocent" sharing prayer request. Maybe speaking unkindly of in-laws or other family members.  Neighbors bothering you and you chatter away about it. Co workers are irritating the heck out of you and you continue to jabber on. Forming opinions of others without knowing their situation. Treating certain people better than others. Being rude to telemarketers.

When you claim to be a Christian it entails a huge responsibility and that is trying to act like one when people are looking or when they are not. You may be the only Christian in your office for instance so then you should be kind and set a good example. If you have a hard time dealing with certain personalities then pray about it and pray for them regardless. We never know what people are going through or have been through that makes the way they are.

Try the best you can to not allow any unwholesome word come from your mouth. (See Ephesians 4:29). Sometimes God has us certain places for a reason. Ask Him what he wants you to learn and ask Him to use you just where you are.

PRAYER: You have a plan for my life Lord. I am not perfect so forgive me when I put others down and don't show love. Help me be more Christlike. In Jesus' name.Amen.

Extreme.....Yes I Am, For Righteousness!

Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people. Proverbs 14:34

The political spectrum often times runs into the Christian spectrum. Our lives are not to be separate where godly is one way we live and then the other days believe and think whatever we like. Sad to say, the world we reside in, at least here in America, is getting less and less Christian friendly. Deeply held convictions often label us as 'extreme' when in fact we are simply following the word of God and what the Bible commands and teaches. If the word of God is 'extreme' then so be it, there are millions of extremists.

Evil has crept in and Satan has blinded many minds within and outside of the Christian church community. What we have to do is to stand firm as we are in a spiritual battle for our very souls.  Everything you do or believe should be weighed by what the word of God says. It does not change, to suit a lifestyle or belief held by society. We are at war with the devil. The enemy loves to come in and divide people groups too. Maybe one friend might believe a certain political stand on abortion being okay and you take the stand it is killing a life God created. Once again the enemy is at work dividing the body of Christ.

In the days God has given you to live I urge you to constantly be in prayer. If you do not spend time with Him by reading his word on a regular basis then it is going to be hard to believe the truth. Indeed my friend, the truth will set you free! America and the world need a revival!

PRAYER: I thank you Lord for my Bible. I need to read it daily and study it. Forgive me when I have neglected it, my quiet time, or Sunday fellowship and pursued my own selfish desires. In Jesus' name. Amen.

You Can Do It!

I can do all things through Him who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13

Is there some task you have wanted to try or some goal in mind that you want to do? For example, I used to say I wanted to run a marathon by my 50th birthday but I did not make that goal. I have set other goals to make and worked towards them. Let's say you know you need to lose weight and start being better disciplined in exercise. With God's help and your willingness to do your part, you can set your mind on making this a reality.

Discipline is a thing we need to develop in our spiritual life as well. Not just the lofty goal we often hear of reading the the Bible, although that is admirable, but say of studying each and every day and insuring you are growing your spirit and learning the truths in the Bible. The enemy would love to steal your time. He will make you feel you are "too busy" for taking time in the morning for a prayer or Bible time. He will make the things of Christ seem unimportant on Sunday. Anything Satan can do to clutter your mind and keep it distracted he will do. God is yearning for time with you. Quick question. Do you give time alone with God as much time as Facebook or social media or a hobby? Ouch.

Pray and ask God to examine your heart and bring conviction of the areas you know you need to change to truly make Him first in your life. Don't just say it but live it!

PRAYER: Lord Jesus there have been many times I have done my own thing or said I was too busy for my quiet time. I know that is only Satan trying to get me off the course you want me to be on. I pray for those in my family he has tricked as well. I pray blinders come off and once again we can all hunger and thirst for righteousness. In Jesus' name. Amen.

The Tock Is Clicking

For he says, in the time of my favor I heard you and in the day of salvation I helped you. I tell you, now is the time of Gods'  favor, now is the day of salvation. 2 Corinthians 6:2

Made you look with that title huh? A little play on words to remind us our 'clock is ticking' each and every day. We never know when we will breathe our last breath. If we could choose the way we want to die it may be just sleeping in bed, at age 95, as long as we're still in good health and not on feeding tubes. We do not  get to choose the way we die. And we do not know when. We need to be ready at all times as the Lord could come back anytime it says in the Bible.

Just because you are a church member, baptized, or a certain denomination does not guarantee you admission into the heavenly kingdom. Make sure you know beyond a shadow of a doubt you have asked Jesus to be your Lord and savior. Now is the time of salvation. Don't be left behind.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus we know and we feel the last days are near because of prophecies being fulfilled but yet no one knows the day or the hour. I want to be sure when it is time. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Random Act of Friendly

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. Ephesians 4:32

I believe it was inside a rental car bus at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport  where I saw the sign that is the same as my title asking customers to reward drivers who were observed doing a random act of friendly.  What a novel idea!  We have all heard of random acts of kindness so what about a random act of friendly, just because. Look for ways to help or make people smile.

Many people around us are suffering and may not even show it. Physically, monetarily, emotionally the hurts are there but often times hidden. Pray and ask God to send someone for you to help. Even as much as opening a door for a young mom with her children in tow. Maybe give someone a couple dollars who is fumbling for their money at a check out line and did not have quite enough for the bill. Many elderly people are often lonely so maybe write a letter, an actual paper letter,  to a senior you may know who is all alone. It might be a parent.

As you go about your day forget about yourself and your own troubles for a while and see how you feel helping someone else.

PRAYER: Lord your mercies are new every morning. You bless us so help me bless and show kindness to others without wanting anything in return. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Your Choice...Worrier or Warrior!

Cast all your anxiety on Him for He cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7

Your situation may never change. Your children may never stop doing dangerous things. You are going to die someday. Everyone will. You can enjoy flying without gripping the arm rests. You may get sick, people do.

Please know when you worry you make yourself into an ineffective prayer warrior. Pray, trust, believe, then let it go. Your fretting and anguish will not bring you closer to God or change anything. Many worriers out there need to understand  when you worry you make Satan very thrilled. Don't keep saying "I'm just a worrier" and go through life stressed and anxious. Learn to practice letting go of a situation knowing that by you worrying as it says in scripture in Matthew 6:27, "you can not add an hour to life."

Wake up each day and look at yourself in the mirror and say "I am not going to allow Satan to make me ineffective for you. I trust you God and will NOT worry" then walk away and let it go. If you have been a constant worrier as your daily routine this may take a while to get this new habit.
I have a son who flies planes for a living and another son and daughter in law who enjoy rock climbing.  I do not wake up and fret all day. I am excited for them that they are doing what they enjoy.

Start your day and truly let God have your situation. Turn on some praise music and think of the song 'I Surrender All' then do just that.

PRAYER: You are always with me. You care for my needs and walk with me each day. I need your strength to trust you and stop trying to constantly be on edge. Help me Lord. In Jesus' name.Amen.

Building Blocks of Love

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant. 1 Corinthians 13:4
I love to go to Christian weddings. Typically 1 Corinthians 13 is a chapter the man and woman have chosen to have the minister, priest, or judge read from. It is filled with so many good things. If only the couple will leave the wedding ceremony and make that chapter come alive in their lives on a daily basis and not forget it at the wedding altar. If both parties routinely did what it said, it may put divorce lawyers out of business. Wouldn't that be wonderful?
Love is not about trying to get your own way. Love puts the other person first. So many do this when they are newlyweds but then in some cases complacency sets in. This type of love  is the foundational building block in a solid marriage. Also  life in general takes putting others above yourself.
Are your building blocks of love solid or in need of repair?  God can help you show this kind of love to those you find hard to love whether married or single.

PRAYER: The word love is often overused or misused.  I want to love with your love Jesus, no matter what. This means putting up with those who I do not agree with and trying to be merciful to all. Give me your strength. In Jesus' name. Amen.
