Too Busy For Jesus?

Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. Luke 10:38-42

I am not so sure that Jesus delights in all the scurrying about and stress people bring on themselves by trying to have the perfect Christmas celebration. Now if a person thrives in this atmosphere fine but it is easy to lose site of why you are doing it all anyway if not careful.

Cookie baking, gingerbread house building, erecting and decorating several trees throughout your home, buying perfect gifts, sending cards, attending concerts and plays, planning meals, taking trips, doing a special activity like going to look at lights or going ice skating. The point is this is all very nice to want to have a nice season and build memories but are you forgetting about the Christ child, the babe in a manger?

The Christmas Carol ‘Away in a manger’ has the lyrics ‘no crib for a bed’ and later mentions his bed being hay. No Purple mattress or plush well decorated nursery and the scandal around his teenage mother Mary having a baby and not married also swirled about.  But you know the rest of the story. This was God’s plan and design for His son to be born like this to a humble carpenter and his wife Mary. The baby that would change the world. It is time to celebrate but to also ponder how we got from a simple manger and shepherds and wise men to where we are today. Enjoy this time but think often of why you do what you do.

PRAYER: This is always a happy joyful time of year but for many who get focused on earthly celebrations and gifts it can be painful. Help our focus stay on the Christ child. Father during this season help me shine my light for you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
