The Shelter



For in the day of trouble He will keep me safe in His  dwelling, He will hide me in the shelter of His sacred tent and set me high upon a rock. Psalm 27:5

When the word 'shelter' is spoken what comes to mind? I think of a shelter house in a park also called 'ramadas' in the Southwest. Also the picture of a mother Eagle sheltering her eaglets under her massive wings is another word picture. A storm shelter is something people here in my area of the country might think of as we have lot of tornadoes.

A shelter is basically a place you go to seek refuge and protection. It could be from the sun, from storms, from your enemies. God is our shelter and He is our strength. Whenever the 'storms of life' threaten you He is there to protect you. All you need to do is call on Him.

Will you let God be your shelter?

PRAYER: I am very thankful you are my ultimate shelter from anything that comes my way. Thanks for watching over me. In Jesus' name. Amen.

WHITE CAPS MAKING YOU SCARED?



The part of the country I live in is pretty close to the beaches of both Florida and Alabama relatively speaking. The seashore is a great place to visit. When a storm is brewing at sea the ocean waves can be very scary and often dangerous. Sailors out at sea can attest to the tremendous power of the waves that form massive white caps.

Once on a cruise, my husband and I were on the upper deck around midnight and the dark ocean waves were very large and frightening. I love the ocean but seeing it so black and fierce that night stirred up fear inside of me. I could not even imagine what it would be like to go down with the ship. Pretty scary thought.

Do you recall the story in the Bible about Jesus calming the storm? Mark 34:35-39 recalls the story.'That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!”Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.' What they lacked was faith He could save them.

What storm or white caps are you facing in life? God can still the storms of life if only you cry out to Him.

PRAYER: I need you every hour in my life Lord. I can not do anything on my own. Thank you for getting me through some storms in my life and the storms sure to come. You are my hope! Thanks! In Jesus' name. Amen.

GOD'S TIMING



Many times we become frustrated with prayer and think God just is not listening. He has a greater plan than we do and knows what he is doing. Perhaps you have been lifting a certain issue up in prayer for a family member or friend and it seems there is no change or breakthrough. God is not finished. His ways are not our ways and His thoughts are not our thoughts.

Many people experience the rough waters and storms of life and just feel like throwing up their hands in desperation. Perhaps some of you reading this can identify with that feeling. To continually dwell on a situation you have been praying to change you need to focus on God hearing you and loving you and then try to think about something else. The thought life has to come under control of the Holy Spirit.

Our thoughts can hold us captive almost like being in a jail cell. No way of escaping if we let junk continually drag us down. It is time to get up, get going, and shout out "Jesus you are Lord. Thank you for hearing my prayers for________ and fill in that blank". Then get busy thinking on something else. God is indeed in control.

Isaiah 55:8-9(NIV) says 'For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,”declares the Lord.As the heavens are higher than the earth so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than yours.' A second verse to "fix" your mind on is Philippians 4:8(NIV) which I refer to a good deal in my writings. You may have it memorized by now. It says 'Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.' When you decide to purposely think positive and on "good" things then your life will be much more peaceful. Give your concerns to God and wait for his answer in His time.

PRAYER:Your timing Lord is perfect. It sometimes is hard to wait but I know you hear my prayers and are working in the life of______________. (Fill in blank). You are in control Lord and the worker of miracles and I thank you for that. In Jesus' name. Amen.

ROW,ROW, ROW YOUR BOAT


Many people are familiar with the verses in the Bible about the storm where Jesus calmed the sea. ( See Mark 4:35-41)In life storms will come but we can not just 'stop rowing' but we have to press on to gain the victory. Just as in a race if you are in last place you do not just quit but you keep going, charging on.

Is there a storm in your life you wish would calm down or totally disappear? Have you taken your eyes off Jesus and put them instead onto the storm? Do you feel like giving up? God is with you whether you feel like it or not and he cares how you finish in life. It is not his desire that you just give in and quit when life gets hard. Keep rowing and row some more!!

In an actual storm, such as a tornado, massive destruction often occurs. Sometimes we get so fearful of the dark clouds in life and just freeze in our tracks. Even if the storm has blown your property all over the place you have to keep on going. You can not live on a heap of lumber in your yard. Life goes on and so do you.


Trials and storms are never fun. We just want to go through life trouble free. But it is through those trials that we gain strength to build our character. James 1:2-4 says "Consider it pure joy my brothers and sisters when you face trials of many kinds, because you know the testing of your faith produces perseverance . Let perseverance finish its' work so you may be mature and complete lack to lacking anything."

Is your 'storm' a wayward child, broken marriage, overdue bills, pending lawsuit, time in jail, alcoholism or drug addiction, estranged family member? Whatever it is lean on Jesus as the dark clouds will leave and the sun will shine again. Keep praying, keep believing, keep trusting, and keep rowing.
PRAYER: Lord those storms in life are not fun especially when they seem to go on and on. I know Lord you have a perfect plan for my life and help me to focus on you and not my problem. I know Satan wants me to stop rowing and give up but I choose to press on. In Jesus name.Amen!

DEEP ROOTS


 Do you have plants in your yard or are there some trees? Most of us have these things unless we are apartment dwellers. These plants and trees, like all living things grown in the soil, need substantial roots going down deep to help them grow and get nourishment and water. If they do not receive it they tend to wilt and die. We in the Southeast experienced that during the recent drought.

We believers are like those plants in that if we do not stay grounded in Christ and his word our roots become shallow and we can tend to wither up and not amount to much in the body of Christ.
Jeremiah 17:7-8 says "But blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord.whose confidence is in Him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its' roots by the stream.It does not fear when heat comes, it's leaves are always green. It has no  worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit."

 Let your roots go down deep in Jesus and His word. Be able to withstand the 'storms' of life that may come your way. When you 'plant' yourself in Him you will stand strong against those storms of life.
Colossians 2:6-7 says "So then just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in Him.Rooted and built up in Him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing, with thankfulness."

Let me end with Ephesians 3:16-19 which tells us "that He would grant you according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwelling our hearts through faith that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height to know the  love of Christ which passes knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God."

PRAYER: Father it is my desire to have strong roots and to be able to endure any situation which comes my way. I know when I stay in the word of God I gain strength and can stand up to the trials of life. Give me strength Lord. In Jesus name. Amen.

BROKEN NOT DESTROYED



 In life sometimes bad stuff happens to us, a friend or a family member. Especially if you are following the Lord you may not understand why He did not stop it . You may be confused as you prayed and still this bad stuff occurs. The good news is God redeems, heals, and sets the captives free. His purposes are beyond what we can sometimes understand.

 The enemy, Satan, wants Christians to get down in the dumps  and feel there is no hope. There is always hope and the story is not over yet. Bible teacher Joyce Meyer says to say "I believe God is working" and to say this out loud even when in does not seem like it. Keep on holding onto hope. There is always hope with God. To have an attitude like God does not care or why isn't He working is putting God on your time table.

There may be those reading this but say "Yeah Becky that is fine and good but you have not lost a child to cancer, a wreck, or at birth." That is true that I can not identify with that sort of pain and misery but I do know the Lord didn't cause those things but He does have a way to use all things. It is beyond my understanding and the grief of that has to be pretty severe. Just keep looking to Jesus and share your pain with Him.

 Isaiah 54:17 reminds us "No weapon formed against you shall prosper and every  tongue that accuses you in judgment you will condemn.This is the heritage of the servants of the  Lord, and their righteousness is of me says the Lord."

 Are you able to rejoice when you do not feel up to it? Trying to have joy in all circumstances truly comes from the Lord.

Where are you today? Can you praise God in the storms of life?

PRAYER:: Lord you are good all the time and all the time you are good. In life things happen. No one expects to go through life without some sort of heartbreak. I know Lord you love me and have a plan for my life. Give me the strength to praise you in good times and not so good times. In Jesus name amen.

STORMY LIFE??


As I sit writing this devotion today there are storms outside which a good deal of America needs right now. Storms in life come to all of us. It is how we deal with these times that matters. When you become a Christian that does not mean your life is going to be a bed of roses or your family is all going to be perfect by human standards. In James 1:3 it says "because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance." We at times have to look beyond the 'storm' and look for the 'rainbow'. All storms will end. You have to ask God what it is he wants you to learn from the storm you are experiencing.


What storms are going on in your life right now? Maybe you are just getting over a storm. If you know of someone going through a hard time be there for them. Be an encouragement and a comfort. 2 Corinthians 1:4 says "who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God."

Sometimes when we go through things maybe God is allowing it so somewhere down the road you will have the ability to help someone else endure a hard time. When you go through a trial it is not pleasant but it helps to strengthen you. Romans 5:3-5 reminds us "Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us."

The storm may be a prodigal child, a divorce, a lost job, being hurt by a friend, addiction to drugs or alcohol, being sued, a health issue, loss of property, bankruptcy, a death, to name a few. Whatever it is God can get your through it. Isaiah 43:2 is a great verse of hope for those suffering through some issue in their life and it says "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze."

God will not allow you to be alone. He is the one to turn to. Do not turn to a horoscope, a fortune teller, or some other means to get comfort and advice. Run to him. Pray to him. He alone can strengthen you and get you to the glorious rainbow waiting for you.


PRAYER: Father God there are times things happen I do not understand. There have been times I have caved in and been fretful or even angry at wondering why something has to happen the way it does. Lord I give you my life or that of a family member in a struggle and I ask for understanding and strength to go through this storm and know there is a rainbow waiting and everything is going to be okay. In Jesus Name. Amen.

STORMS IN EVERYONE'S LIFE






 Wednesday 27 April 2011 was a horrible day for storms in the Southeast United States especially here in the area I live close to. Devastating killer tornado's swept through at F4 and F5 intensity, leveling homes, picking up vehicles and tossing them like toys and carrying debris over 80 to 100 miles before it came to rest ,some even in our field here in Tennessee. Unbelievable the force of the winds.

 It is amazing more people did not lose their lives this day. I for one did not realize it was going to be so serious and was out running errands. My husband kept calling saying to get on home. We were spared and I was blessed to get to help several days in the clean up efforts in the nearby communities of Harvest and Toney. When a homeowner sees all they have worked for either gone or laying all over their yard or up in a tree it is a little bit disheartening and hard to take mentally. These folks just needed someone to help them pick up the pieces. What a better time to serve the Lord than by pitching in and helping pick up stuff in yards and talking to homeowners in the process.

'Storms' in general are going to come to everyone in their lifetime. Maybe not in the form of a physical killer tornado but in the form of death, bad news, job loss, failed tests in school, disappointment, rejection, and much more. It is how we handle these 'storms' that matters. Do we just give up and get into a depressed state which is natural or do we cry out to Jesus for his help and comfort? Many get mad at God when 'storms' come into their life. Many storms have a silver lining if we can hang on the 'getting through'  process. James 1:3 says "For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow."

What storms are you going through right now? Do you feel like God doesn't care or you will never see the sun again? It seems that way in the midst of turmoil but there are rainbows after storms and there will be 'rainbows' for you too if you only keep praying, believing and hold on to Jesus.
Luke 18:1 says to "pray and never give up". Can you do that? Can you keep praying in the midst of your troubles? It is the best way to get through it and to get victory and peace.

PRAYER: Lord God I thank you for both the good times and the bad. Thank you that you never leave my side and I find comfort in knowing you are always with me even in the rough spots of life. Help me Lord to learn to run to you and not fear when problems arise .In Jesus name. Amen.

PRAISE HIM REGARDLESS

It is easy to praise God when things are going our way but when the bottom falls out of life then it gets a little more challenging.   When you are going through a bad time of life the best thing you could do in order to combat the attacks of the   enemy, who seeks to destroy your joyful spirit, is to focus on a loving God and praise Him. Yes you heard me, praise the Lord.

Praise him in the morning. Praise Him at noon. Praise him when you are feeling good and praise him when you are not doing so good.  Praise Him when you lose and praise Him when you win. Praise Him on cloudy, rainy days and praise him on sunny days. Psalm 113:3 says " From the rising of the sun to the place that it sets, the Lord's name is to be praised."

It says in Psalm 22:3 " The Lord inhabits the praises of his people."  Psalm 9:11 says "
Sing praises to the LORD, enthroned in Zion; proclaim among the nations what he has done."

In Job  13:15 it says"Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him."  In Job 1:21 it says "The Lord gives the Lord takes away blessed be the name of the lord." Job went through more than most humans could take. Get your Bible and turn to the book of Job in the Old Testament if you are not familiar with it. It is an eye opener. How do you praise God when a child dies or you lose your job? God did not cause these things and he knows you are broken hearted but it still says to praise Him. Things in life happen. God is still there and still on the throne. It does not praise Him 'if only' or 'when only'.

If you are feeling  down today, read the following OUT LOUD and see if you do not feel better.
Lord I praise you for making me.
Lord I praise your name above all others names.
Lord I praise you for another day of life.
Lord I praise you for friends.
Lord I praise you for answered prayer.
Lord I praise you for providing for my basic needs.
Lord I praise you for my family.
Lord I praise you for our creation.
Lord I praise you for your awesome power.
Lord I praise you for the gift of good health.
Lord I praise you for living in a Christian nation.
Lord I praise you for the valuable lessons I learn in life.
Lord I praise you that I can see in order to read this devotion.

You get the idea. Now go add some of your own. And when Satan tries to get you to be mad at Jesus just say "Get behind me Satan. I do not believe your lies."

PRAYER: Father I thank you for your mighty power and protection. I thank and praise you for the wonderful plan you have for my life. I know you are always with me and will never abandon me. Forgive me if I have ever blamed tragedy on you. In Jesus name. Amen.

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS AND BE JOYFUL

Recently I saw a church sign similar to the title of my devotion. This sign is so pertinent to what has just happened in my local area that being the second outbreak of tornado's on a major scale within the same year. Not only did they hit but they struck the same area and some of the same homes were blown apart again.

 Just a couple days ago I rallied with other area volunteers  to once again, in less than a year, help  the same tornado victims who had been hurt on 27 April 2011. How do you help those who have lost their homes and possessions in not one tornado, but two in less than a year? First thing you may think is "move somewhere else for crying out loud!" Not everyone can do that, but some do. These people are stunned that a less powerful F2 or F3 hit them with a direct hit less than 12 months from the F4 or F5 that hit 27 April 2011.  How do you go on after a second devastation like this? It is almost like the 'Job Syndrome' where in the book of Job he lost it all. Get a cup of coffee and sit down and read Job. What do you say to bring comfort to these hurting people who once again have gone through immense material loss?

How do you bring hope to people who have had hopes and dreams of moving into their brand new homes with brand new possessions when the unexplainable happened and blew walls, roofs, and windows from their new homes, some of which were not even moved into yet? Why do things like this happen? How do you console them? The one good thing that most victims will say is "We at least have our lives". The best thing a helper can do besides pick up debris and possessions is to be a listening ear or give a hug and pray of course.

This time these devastating tornado's not only were not as powerful blowing debris 80 miles away, but in our area there were no tornado related deaths. Hallelujah for that! A few injured went to area hospital ER's for treatment but all in all most got away without injuries in this one. But still, there is that issue with the home being destroyed yet again. It almost makes you afraid to try build it for the third time. How do you get peace and contentment at times like these? As I looked at the same exact area that I had walked in less than 11 months ago I was shocked and had no explanation. Can you imagine the homeowners feelings?


"The Lord gives and the Lord takes away" it says in Job 1:21. Blessed be the name of the Lord.

At a time like this you really have to hang on to your faith and not run from it and be mad. In one home I helped in, there was the Bible on a table, several Christian books and multiple copies of laminated Ten Commandments. The woman was in fairly good spirits as we carried what remained out to haul away to storage.


First know that our possessions are not what make us. Next remember that there are no U Haul trucks going to the cemetery with your possessions to send to eternity with you. It is God who gives us our blessings and we are to be good stewards of them. In 1 Timothy 6:8 it tells us "But having food and clothing, we will be content with that." We think all the other things will make us happy but do they really? Proverbs 23:5 says "Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle." Well in a tornado that could be literal but in this sense it means that money is fleeting and in the big scheme of things not what life is about.  In the movie 'It's a Wonderful Life', Jimmy Stewarts' character, George Bailey, after attempting suicide because of financial problems, was saved by his angel Clarence Oddbody 2nd Class. George Bailey says to Clarence when he finds out he was sent here to help him "I know one way you can help me. You don't happen to have 8,000 bucks on you?" Clarence replies "No, we don't use money in Heaven" wherein George responds " Well, it comes in real handy down here, bud!"


Proverbs 27:24 says "for riches do not endure forever, and a crown is not secure for all generations." 1 Timothy 6:17 tells us "Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment." We never know when we will lose it all. Having your life is what counts in the end. Psalm 52:7 says " Here now is the man who did not make God his stronghold but trusted in his great wealth and grew strong by destroying others!"

It boils down to this. Do not trust in your possessions or your wealth as they could be gone in an instant. Let God guide you and show you His perfect peace in the midst of a storm.

Matthew 10:29 says "What is the price of two sparrows--one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it." Just know the Lord is watching over you and you only need to trust Him. You are more important than the sparrows.

PRAYER: Lord help me to not trust in my home, my car, my bank account, or my possessions but you are my source of joy. Help me not be so dependent on things that if they all went away I could not have joy. In Jesus Name. Amen.

VALUABLE LESSONS TO BE LEARNED

 I saw a church sign recently that read 'Lost Battles Teach Valuable Lessons'. Oh how true that is. When we are at our lowest point sometimes is when we learn the greatest lessons of life. Trouble has a way of teaching us things. The best lessons of life sometimes are learned when we have to get on our knees in prayer. Things are going along great then something bad happens. Life takes a U Turn as the saying goes. Do we fall apart or do we 'get up little soldier' and keep going?

When you fall in a mud puddle you do not just stay there and get all dirty and wet but you get up out of the muck and go wash off. Same thing in life. Things happen and sometimes they are very hurtful but as in the Army they call it 'lessons learned', in life too it is a valuable teacher. When we are at our lowest point is sometimes when we reach out to God the most, or at least it should be that way. Also in the military it is called 'foxhole religion' but unlike in foxhole religion where it is a passing prayer "Oh Lord Get me out of this and I will serve you forever"  when bad things happen, if we run to God and get into the word and learn, then we do get stronger for what we have gone through.

 Sonia Lee, a singer out of Nashville who I heard perform at Nashville's famed  Bluebird Cafe a few years ago has a wonderful song called "Trouble Is The Best Teacher I Know" and there was a time in my life where that song helped me get through some rough times. Trouble is truly a teacher. If we did not ever have a problem how would we learn and get stronger? Think of the palm tree that weathers hurricane force winds yet still bends with the winds and remains standing. We too get beat around at times but we lean on the Lord and He alone is our strength and comforter when we have nothing else. For some that is literal. For instance the prisoner who has no one else to talk to.

My blog is called God's Lemonade Stand meaning it is a way to bring refreshment to weary souls but the other kind of lemonade you hear about in Christian circles is God making lemonade out of the 'lemons' of life.  Those lemons need doctored up a bit before they are sweet enough to enjoy as a beverage. God does heal our hurts and calm our weary hearts. He will see you through. Trust him. Time is a healer.

When problems in life overwhelm us go to the rock, meaning Jesus. Get into his word as it is only through the word of God that comfort can come. Psalm 92:19 says "When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul." Isaiah 66:13 says "As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; and you will be comforted over Jerusalem."

PRAYER: Father I need you today and every day. I do not need to wait til overwhelmed with the issues of life but I need you in good times and bad. Thank you for the hope and comfort only you give. I look to you as my strength father. I will not worry when problems come because you are bigger than any of life's problems. In Jesus Name. Amen.

GO TO YOUR STORM SHELTER

The storms of life will come. All of us have them. They can be in form of death, loss of job, divorce, health problems, betrayal , or a myriad of things. Jesus is the one true 'storm shelter' we need to run to when the storms of life hit. Storms of life always hit. Everyone seems to have one of some sort sometime. They are unavoidable. We go through lots of things in life. Note the word 'through' which indicates you do not stay there but move on 'through' to something else. That word alone brings hope and promise.

Isaiah 43:2 says "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze." God will walk with you through the storm. Remember how he protected Daniel in the Lions Den(See Daniel 6:4-27) and Shadrach Meshach and Abednego in the fiery furnace? (See Daniel 3).He can protect you too. Isaiah 43:5 tells us "Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bring your children from the east and gather you from the west."

Deuteronomy 31:6 promises " Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you." Hang on to the hope that Jesus will be with you and by your side at all times. Remember the footprints illustration where there were two sets of footprints then suddenly only one in the sand? When one set of footprints was in the sand that is where we are told "God carries us". Psalm 23:4 further tells us "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me."

The storms of life will come and we do not need to fear, for God is with us seeing us through til the skies become sunny once again.

PRAYER: Lord I know storms will come. Help strengthen me during these times and trust in you. Help me learn from these times so I can help others who may suffer later.In Jesus Name. Amen.
