Taming The Social Media Monster

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Philippians 4:8
Okay so it's 2016 and everyone is into social media, the latest craze being a Pokemon app. Facebook, Instagram, Snap Chat, and many more sites beckon us to waste valuable time peering into others lives and playing games. A challenge for today's parents whose children knew nothing but electronic devices is to back away from them and do other things. We adults probably need to listen up as well and ask how much time we're using these sites and what are we gaining from them.
Many wonderful things can be found on the internet(God's Lemonade Stand) but if people in society just sit glued to tiny screens all day long the valuable social interaction of face to face communication is lost. I sat by a young woman on a flight from DC several years ago who was concerned her generation was going to lose the ability to have face to face interaction.

So what do you do? First, similar to other things, discipline is required. Do other things besides being on communication devices throughout the day. For those with full time jobs this is no problem but others with free time may tend to gravitate to their mobile devices. Stop and make sure you are giving Jesus quality and quantity time. Maybe using a paper Bible to get you away from looking verses up on computer. I guess the main thing is to make sure you are not neglecting God's word and your quiet time to check statuses of friends and family. Believe me I am preaching to the choir of one, myself.

PRAYER: Lord help me as I seek balance in my life online and offline. Convict me of what I need to do that is really important. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  1. Good sage advise for each of us. Since my release from a rehab center, I have drastically cut down on my computer time. Now, the television and those old shows from my early years are good but even then, I have to take a break from even them.
