LAND OF THE FREE BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE

Today in the United States we celebrate Memorial Day which is a day to remember those military members who gave their life for the cause of freedom. Back when I was in high school and in the marching band this day was special. We marched up to the town cemetery and had a special service of remembrance. Now it seems all you hear about are special Memorial Day sales in the mall. What better way to say thank you to a deceased vet than to buy a new sofa right? Pretty disgusting isn't it? If you have served in the military it is hurtful when this day is relegated to nothing more than a sales day for local merchants. No one seems to honor the war heroes who fought and died anymore. You might catch a service on C Span from Arlington National Cemetery or on Public TV as I did last night but otherwise it seems this day is celebrated as the opening of the city pool in many communities or a day to go to the beach. Thank goodness we can do those things because of the deaths of the servicemen who defended our nation.

We in the United States of America are blessed with special freedoms. This country is like no other. There will always be evil forces trying to take away freedoms. These freedoms were secured with the lives of thousands of soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines who fought and died to insure we could live in this democracy.  2 Corinthians 3:17 says "Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom." Another verse about giving your life for others is John 15:13 which says "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." Truly these brave men and women gave the ultimate gift, their life, so we might have the freedoms we enjoy today. Many others returned but without limbs or missing an eye or with severe mental conditions.

So stop what you are doing today. Do not take for granted your freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to peacefully assemble and many others. Little by little our current government has been chipping away at our personal freedoms. We have to be alert to the fact there will be evil forces who do not like this freedom we have and will try to control us and take it away. If that happens then what did these men and women die for? The enemy, Satan, does not like freedom. He wants us in bondage.

Thank the Lord daily for what he has blessed us with and where he has placed you. Furthermore think of the ultimate sacrifice of those who fought and died to keep the United States of America free. Do not take for granted these freedoms and stand firm to protect what the soldiers died for. Psalm 33:12 says "Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people he chose for his inheritance."

Our first President George Washington said it well and I will close with this. "It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible." And he further said "Government is not reason, it is not eloquence, it is force; like fire, a troublesome servant and a fearful master. Never for a moment should it be left to irresponsible action." Thank you men and women of the US Armed Forces for your tremendous courage and sacrifice to keep us a free land.

PRAYER: Thank you Lord for the freedoms we enjoy in America and for those who gave their lives so we could enjoy this day and every day. In Jesus Name. Amen!
