What is joy? Does it mean you are all giddy and happy and falling all over yourself? James 1:2 was a verse highlighted in church yesterday in ministering to the residents of a community that has just had a F5 tornado destroy hundreds of homes and takes hundreds of lives statewide. Many have been deeply effected by this disaster in more ways than one.
First what is the definition of joy? The Christian definition would likely be to delight in something or a feeling of great happiness or delight. James 1:2 says "Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy." Say what? You must be kidding? How can I be joyful when suffering is around me, pain, heartache and grief? This is a supernatural joy the Bible is referring to.
Joy is one of the fruits of the spirit mentioned in Galatians 5:22 and it says "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness". Do you 'grow' these fruits in your life? It is through the trials of life that we do develop the Christian character God wants us to have. We need that strength for the journey and the road ahead.
So true joy is not based on what is going on around you but it is an inner sort of peace and contentment we have knowing God has a bigger plan and we are to trust him. He did not promise no pain in life. It is through trying times our patience and joy have time to mature and develop. The ultimate goal is trying to be more like Jesus and having the ability to 'get through' things so we may in fact minister God's love to those he puts in our path.
PRAYER: Father I trust that all things in life have a plan and purpose. I want to maintain that supernatural joy only you can produce. When things do not always go the way I think they should help me Lord trust you that you have a bigger plan and you are bigger than any trial that comes my way. In Jesus Name .Amen.
